2019 has been a bad year for Pakistani films. A handful of 20-21 local films released this year out of which only a few managed a decent performance. Most of the films were a huge debacle at the Boxoffice. Cinemas were mostly dependent on English content and on the re-release of holdover films in order to keep the business going.

In contrast, Hollywood films registered some of the biggest numbers of this year! For the first time in recent years, a Hollywood film became the highest grossing film of the year. Avengers: Endgame was truly a global phenomenon which shattered worldwide records. It was also a raving success in Pakistan. It soared at the box-office here as it hit the PKR 300 million mark, becoming the first Hollywood film to register such a staggering performance in Pakistan. After Avengers: Endgame, anticipated Hollywood biggie Hobbs and Shaw also registered an impressive performance. The film starred celebrated Hollywood actors Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. Hobbs and Shaw also topped PKR 200 million in Pakistan!

On the other hand, Local films Parey Hut Love and Superstar both raked in similar numbers around PKR 240 million and became the highest grossing Pakistani films of the year. While Yasir Nawaz’s Wrong No 2 emerged as the 3rd highest grossing Pakistani film of 2019 by also topping the 200 million mark.

However, it was a dismal year for Pakistani films. 2019 was the year of Hollywood films in Pakistan. As per Boxofficedetail, around 50% of English film’s gross this year came from Disney’s films.

Although, Hollywood’s latest outing and the last Hollywood film of the year Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is off to a slow start, most of Hollywood films have done very well! DC’s Joker has been a hit while Disney’s live action The Lion King has raked in good numbers too!
