As the prestigious 91st Academy Awards and the biggest award night of the year comes to an end, lets acknowledge all those with a Pakistani descent, who have been honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and made us proud. These are the people who have given Pakistan global recognition through their noteworthy work.

Following is the list of people with a Pakistani descent who have won or have been nominated at the Oscars!

1.Hanif Kureishi

Born in South London to a Pakistani father and an English mother, Hanif Kureishi is an illustrious British playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker and a prominent novelist of Pakistani and English descent. He received an Academy Award nomination for the Best Screenplay for My Beautiful Laundrette in 1986. The highly esteemed writer has also given us several best sellers and has inspired many here in Pakistan!

2. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

The talented Pakistani documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won an Oscar twice and we couldn’t have been more proud! She first received an Oscar for Saving Face in 2011 and later for A Girl In The River in 2015. Sharmeen Obaid is the only Pakistani woman to have bagged two Oscars and we have utmost respect for her! The truly masterly filmmaker also holds the honor of creating Pakistan’s first animated series, 3 Bahadur.

3. Mir Zafar Ali

Mir Zafar Ali is a Pakistani movie visual effects artist. He was a member of the team that won the Academy Award for best visual effects for the 2007 film The Golden Compass. In 2012, he was a member of the team that won the Academy Award for best visual effects for The Life of Pi and in 2014 he was a member of the team that won the Academy Award for the film Frozen. He is the first Pakistani to have been connected with an Academy Award-winner for Best Visual Effects! Mir Zafar Ali has bagged 3 Oscars and made us immensely proud.

4. Kumail Nanjiani

In 2018, Pakistani-American actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani got nominated for a writing award, nominated alongside Emily V. Gordon for their screenplay for The Big Sick. The actor/comedian is surely very talented and we absolutely laud him!
