The producer of Maula Jatt Sarwar Bhatti has had locked horns with the makers of The Legend of Maula Jatt Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Leshari over making a film, claiming they did not have legal rights to do so.

The movie is scheduled to release on Eid ul Fitr, which is closing in! The latest update on the case is that the respondents have been summoned to a court hearing on 22 April.


Intellectual Property Tribunal presiding officer Malik Munir Ahmed Joyia has ordered Ammara Hikmat, Bilal Lashari, Kamran Lashari, Nasir Adeeb, Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, Humaima Malick, Federal & Provincial Secretaries of Information, Chairman film producers association, Chairman & Vice Chairman Federal, Sindh & Punjab Censor Boards to appear in person in Contempt proceedings initiated on petition of Muhammad Sarwar Bhatti producer of original 1979 Maula Jatt through his counsel Ahsan Masood Advocate.

The stance of the petitioner’s counsel Ahsan Masood is that according to the decision taken on 07/08/2018 the Tribunal had restrained the respondents from using the title Maula Jatt for their Movie, getting censor certificate and exhibiting their movie with the title Maula Jatt.

Moreover through the same order the Tribunal also restrained federal and provincial censor boards from issuing censorship certificate for the movie bearing title Maula Jatt. However a censor certificate was issued.

The case related to use of characters, dialogues and script of original Maula Jatt is pending before the Intellectual property Tribunal since October 2017 apart from two pending inquiries before the FIA against the producers of new Maula Jatt, its team and Registrar of Copyrights. The inquiry has been pending for more than a year now ,awaiting response from copyrights department.

According to Advocate Ahsan Masood the copyright department has illegally and unlawfully issued a second certificate with the same name i.e. Maula Jatt in presence of copyright certificate issued in the name of Mr. Bhatti without any notice to given to him.

Since copyright department issued the second certificate without complying the mandatory legal provisions of the copyright ordinance therefore, the cancellation of the illegal and unlawful certificate has also been sought.
