Wajahat Rauf is a diverse and talented film maker who is also a pioneer of creating web series in Pakistan. His web series ‘Enaaya’ starring Mewhish Hayat and Azfar Rehman unfolds a musical drama and has been very well received internationally.

In addition, he has the much adored films Karachi se Lahore and Lahore Se Aagey to his credits. The film maker is currently working on his third film, Chalawa which also features Mehwish Hayat, Azfar Rehman and others in pivotal roles.

He has also produced dramas under the banner of Showcase productions. Currently one of his productions, ‘Qaid’ is airing on Geo Tv.

We approached Wajahat Rauf on the occasion of Women’s day and asked him to share his views on women’s representation in media. We asked him to share the importance of women centric content in dramas.
WR: “Dramas have a massive female audience. So it makes sense for us to tell their stories”
However, Tv content reinforces stereotypes which often undermine women. So what are your views on that?
WR: “I am strongly against undermining female characters and try my best to show empowerment, but sometimes we are bound by the briefs given to us by channels.”
How important do you think is “The damsel in distress avatar” for the success of a drama?
WR: “Again the ratings of entertainment channels are largely based on a female audience and somehow this formula has worked for them. In all 3 of my films, my female characters were stronger than any of the other characters….”
