Is Steven Spielberg right about Netflix

While the film and entertainment industry has modernized with advancement of technology and shifted to digital platforms, some filmmakers like Steven Spielberg choose to be old school. He believes that film theaters matter.

Steven Spielberg is the governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he reportedly intends to propose change in rules of selection of digital platform films from being nominated for Oscars . He believes that Oscars are for films that get theatrical release only, films getting digital release on streaming portals like Netflix.

“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar”, Spielberg said. “I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”

His comments are being interpreted as a consequence of the Oscar win of Netflix film Roma in multiple categories. Netflix has enabled small filmmaker to showcase their talent even if they can’t give their project a theatrical release. That does not mean that their content is not worthy of praise, recognition and prestige.

Having said that Netflix’s streaming culture has slighting undermined the importance of theater and film culture. Instead of going to cinemas films are being preferred to be watched at home.

Some film maker have also spoken in support of the streaming giant as well

Netflix took it to Twitter to give an apt response to the situation:


Although the network has not refereed to the film maker in anyway, it clearly a response to his recent comments.

So what can be a viable solution for this conflict? If things do escalate, a viable solution would be for the Oscars to introduce a new category dedicated solely to digital platform.
