2019 has been a dull year for Pakistani films. In comparison, 2018 was an auspicious year which concluded on a strong note. 2018 saw many records being broken by multiple films.
Teefa In Trouble raked in 33cr becoming the highest grossing Non-Holiday release in Pakistani films. Then Eid ul Azha saw the spectacular business of Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2. Not only did JPNA 2 break the records of Sanju, it also became the first and only film to hit a 50cr mark. Even Parwaaz Hai Junoon saw a huge business with numbers going around 35cr approx.
We were also pleasantly surprised when The Donkey King emerged as the blockbuster of the year. Film has set new benchmarks for animated films which will continue to stand tall for a long time.
As many films registered good performance in 2018, we entered 2019 with a lot of hopes. However 2019’s performance has been dismal.
The most anticipated film of 2019, The Legend Of Maula Jatt did not release. Bilal Lashari and Ammara Hikmat’s film was bound to outperform but unfortunately it could not release in 2019. Pakistan’s most sought after film star, Humayun Saeed’s upcoming film Love You Jatta was also postponed and his film Project Ghazi was a debacle. Apart from that, the actor did not take up any film in 2019, which was a setback.
In addition, leading actors like Ali Zafar, Fahad Mustafa and Shaan Shahid also stayed away from the cinema screens in 2019. Shaan Shahid’s film Zarrar has also been postponed. With the leading actors of the film industry away from the film business, the business took a blow.
Despite the fact that popular actresses Mahira Khan and Mehwish Hayat were seen in films this year, their films still could not break any all time records.
