It often happens that after success of one project, if the same team regroups to bring forth another project the audience has high expectations. 2018 created massive hype for Feroze Khan and Sana Javed starrer Khaani. The project was of ace producers Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi and was directed by Anjum Shehzad. The story managed to move away from the Saas Bahu syndrome, and presented a story that was different yet relateable to the audience. Feroze’s massive fan following favored the drama as well who had been previously adored for his bad boy avatar in Gul e Rana.
The likability for the drama translated into sky rocketing ratings and millions of Youtube views. While the drama was still airing, news surfaced that the duo will be seen in yet another drama. The drama was being helmed by the same team. What was even more interesting was the fact that the serial was being penned down by the Hum Sub Umeed Sy Hain writer Dr Younis Butt!
While Khaani was along more serious, dramatic and some what romantic lines, Romeo Weds Heer is a comedy. The diversity in genres assured viewers to see the beloved couple in completely different avatars. The actor was going to follow the tried and tested formula by starring the same actors that they did in Khaani . It was anticipated that when this drama begins to air we will be seeing a similar hype and rightly so!
The drama took off on a high note for sure, however now that the drama has reached midway of its run, it is noticeable that the hype has worn down.
What could possibly be the reason for this decline? Wasn’t the star power of the dynamic duo strong enough to keep the audiences hooked?
They had such a big team they could have given Koi Chand Rakh a hard time, which is currently the highest rated drama of the week. However it doesn’t even come close to Koi Chand Rakh’s ratings.
The first episode had around 7.9 million views while the latest episode only has 1.3 million views. In contrast Koi Chand Rakh’s first episode had 7.8 million views and it latest episode number 26 has 1.6 million views. Even though Romeo weds Heer is still being watched by many, its hype has toned down.
It seems that the makers have failed to create top notch content that resonates with the audience. Also the Pakistani audiences prefers serious sensationalized sob stories with a oppressed protagonist in contrast to a light hearted comedy with rather silly yet colorful characters.
Either way the makers have missed out on a huge opportunity. The makers had the chance to capitalize on the success of Khanni. With the popular pairing of Feroze Khan and Sana Javed, the makers could have stolen the limelight of Koi Chaand Rakh. However, the weak content has led them down. Although Romeo Weds Heer is doing well, however the drama had all the winning ingredients in its cast and crew which could have reaped exceptional results. Khaani whose OST alone has 35 Million views was a huge success. Compared to it, Romeo Weds Heer’s performance has been mediocre.
