HBO aired the 5th and the second last episode of the final season of Game Of Thrones last Sunday. Game of Thrones is one of the biggest Tv series of all time. Starring Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington in lead roles, the latest episode was a visual extravaganza.
Game of Thrones has always been admired for its epic battles. “Battle Of Blackwater” in its second season was a masterpiece. Then we witnessed another epic battle in the shape of “Hardhome” in the fifth season. Sixth season gave us “Battle Of Bastards”. This battle was not only epic in its execution but it can also be termed as the best battle in television history. All these battles had mind blowing visuals and at the same time they had an amazing narrative. Set at the backdrop of profound story telling, these battles became highly memorable.
The battle at the King’s Landing in the latest episode of GOT was surely mesmerizing in term of visuals and scale however it was easily the worst episode in the history of GOT as it had banked upon a poorly writer script. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had an opportunity as this battle featured all the big names of the series together. They could have pulled of a marvel however they ended up wasting all of the talent.
The story line was full of flaws and apparently they were trying too hard to pull off the unexpected. However this came at the cost of ruining all the characters’ arcs. These arcs were developed through a span of 7 seasons.
We are just one episode away from the finale and this was the most important episode of the series. However, it appears David Benioff and D.B. Weiss just threw the whole storyline, characters and narrative down the gutter while solely focusing their energy on the visuals.
We still can not fully understand why Danny attacked innocent people. They took 9 years to build her character. We knew her as merciful and kind to the poor. This abrupt and sudden transition in her character is both absurd and unjustifiable. She burns poor people alive. The makers have ruined a fan favorite character without any logic in a haste to wrap the show up and in an attempt to be unpredictable.
Similarly, we also have a hard time digesting the end that the makers have given to pivotal characters like Jaime and Cersei Lannisters. In addition, we fail to understand why the protagonist of the show i.e. Jon Snow has no significant part in the whole battle.
The Episode wasted a lot of important characters by not giving them a part, it wasted the actors’ talent by not giving them the chance to perform the way they do and with such a weak storyline, the brilliant visuals were wasted too.
All in all, everything appeared appealing except the story and narrative. This episode is a proof that good content is vital as it can dent the face value of a even a brand. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have ruined the whole show for its fans and viewers due to sloppy writing in episode 5. HBO now airs the final episode of the series, this coming Sunday.
