The producers of The Legend of Maula Jatt, Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Lashari have been engaged in a legal battle with Sarwar Bhatti. In 2017, Sarwar Bhatti filed a case against Bilal Lashari and Ammara Hikmat claiming a violation of copyrights. The controversial Maula Jatt case has still not been resolved.
In response the producers of The Legend of Maula Jatt replied that
Their film is not a remake of Maula Jatt. In fact they claimed that it has a very different script. The producers of the upcoming venture recently sued Sarwar Bhatti for defamation, with an amount of RS 500 million.
They responded that numerous films have been made based on the character of Maula Jatt however there were no issues with those as they pertained to different scripts as does The Legend of Maula Jatt. In addition, they said that the use of the words “Maula Jatt” in combination with other words does not amount to any trademark infringement
However the matter further aggravated. In a conversation with Epk, Muttaqi Ali the Ceo of Bahoo films has now informed us that they have contacted higher authorities regarding the Maula Jatt case.
They have written to the prime minister, interior minister, minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry and the minister of human rights of Pakistan i.e. Dr Shireen Mazari. They have even contacted the army and other civil servants.
Bahoo films have submitted their official statement to the authorities claiming that the producers of The Legend of Maula Jatt have committed contempt of court.
He said that the court’s verdict was very clear which stated that the combination of the words “Maula Jatt” cannot be used. Neither the film producers association was supposed to agree to this title nor was the censor board supposed to clear the movie with this title according to paragraph 18 and paragraph 19 in court’s order.
However, the producers Ammara Hikmat and Bilal Lashari still used wording of “Maula Jatt” in their title which Muttaqi Ali claimed is against the verdict of the court.
The Maula Jatt case is still ongoing in FIA. The case has been pending from over a year now, Muttaqi Ali said that there was no proof of an infringement previously as the trailer or the name of the movie had not yet been revealed. In addition, the other party told the court that the characters and the script that they are using in their upcoming film is very different.
He has heard about the defamation notice sent by Ammara Hikmat. He said that amongst all of this, it is they who have been getting defamed and not the producers of the upcoming film. He said that people from all over the world have been asking them if they are producing another movie with the name of Maula Jatt? However, they have to tell them that the film is not theirs rather their copyrights are being violated. Upon this, people sympathize with them.
