Recently news surfaced that PEMRA’s chairman has issued a statement imposing a ban on the exhibition of Indian movies in Pakistani cinemas. EPK reached out to the Chairman of PEMRA Muhammad Saleem Baig for clarification.

He informed us that no such statement has been passed from his end. In fact film exhibition does not fall under the domain of PEMRA and hence he has no regulatory authority in terms of placing a ban on them. He rendered the reports completely false.

Pakistan’s Cinema Exhibitors Association bans Indian Films

Indian content was banned following the LOC breach by the Indian army which led to strained relations between the two countries. As retaliation all Indian movies were taken off. However it must be mentioned that the order came from Pakistan Cinema Exhibitors association and not PEMRA.

PEMRA is concerned with broadcasting of Indian content on television and in a recent event the chairman made his intentions clear that illegal screening of Indian content on TV will not be allowed. However there was no mention of a ban on the exhibition of Indian films in the press release of the event either.
