Marvel films are truly a cinematic marvel which have become raving successes over the years. Late Stan Lee’s hugely imaginative films have taken the world by storm. With the creation of avengers series which features a whole squad of superheros together, Marvel has set new benchmarks at the boxoffice globally.
The series are now coming to an end. Avenger’s finale, Avengers: Endgame will see a worldwide release on 26th April. With the eagerly awaited Avengers: Endgame approaching, let’s have a look at how Marvel films have been doing in Pakistan over time.
Marvel was not always a brand here. However, it started to get noticed with the release of Avengers: Civil War. Later Thor Ragnarok released in 2017. The brand name of Thor has a decent following in Pakistan and the film did well.
Thor managed an opening of about 1 Cr. It later went on to collect about 7 Cr which was very good for an English film. Comparatively Marvel’s Black Panther was not a brand. However Black Panther pleasantly surprised at the boxoffice as it managed to garner more success than Thor.
2018 started off with Black Panther which was released in February 2018, starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Lupita Nyong’o. The story revolved around T’Challa’s who claims his place as the King of Wakanda after his father’s death. He emerges as the Black Panther, the guardian of Wakanda.
The movie has been nominated for three Golden Globes categories as well and it made a total of 7.5 crore in Pakistan. Black Panther performed exceptionally and emerged as the highest grosser out of all marvel films.
Then came another Marvel movie and this one shattered all previous records of Marvel films in Pakistan. Avengers: Infinity War lays out the backstory of Endgame and is one of the most tragic and emotional installments of Avengers.
The turn out was very good for Avengers Infinity war in Pakistan. The movie banked upon the star power of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and others altogether. The film tragically ends with Thanos wiping out half the universe and killing some of the superheroes. The movie left fans bewildered and now fans are eager to see how their beloved heroes will come back.
Infinity War turned out to be a huge blockbuster in Pakistan grossing over 20 crores approx and becoming the third highest Hollywood grosser in Pakistani cinema history.
Later, Ant man was released in July 2018 however the film didn’t do well considering that the movie was not a established brand name like Iron man or Thor. Ant man made approximately 1.95 crore.
Whereas, Dead-pool an R-rated Marvel movie was released in May. The movie had a humor angle to it as well. The movie was released during Ramadan which affected its numbers slightly however overall it made a total of approximately 4.25 crores.
Marvel films have a huge following all around the world and no matter what movie it produces, the turn out is usually great. However in Pakistan it has been noticed that it is not always the case. Marvel’s latest release, Captain Marvel has an important connection with Avengers: Endgame. The film was therefore crucial for marvel fans even though Captain Marvel has not been established as a brand yet.
However the film released 4 weeks late than its international release in Pakistan and therefore not much can be said about its boxoffice collection as it has tempered with due to its late release. Nevertheless Captain Marvel took a remarkable start here. Unfortunately, it saw drops and failed to hold over the weekdays. The film is still running in cinemas.
Avengers Infinity war is the only Marvel film and the 3rd Hollywood movie which has crossed the 20 crore mark in Pakistan. However, Avengers: Endgame is anticipate to break this record. The film has immense buzz and fans are very ecstatic about its release.
Endgame has also made a record by registering the highest number of advance ticket sales in Pakistan. By now, Avengers is an acclaimed brand in Pakistan and we can expect wonders from the film at the boxoffice.
