The Oscar nominations were announced yesterday. As we count down the days till the event, lets have a look at the nominations and assess who has better chance of winning. First up, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga starrer A Star is Born has been nominated in numerous categories.
The film’s story is extremely heart touching however it has striking resemblance to Bollywood movie Aashique 2 that also centered around a drunk musician who falls in love but fails to give up his habit. Realizing that he has become a hindrance in the success of the love of his life he commits suicide.
Considering the movie’s screenplay has been adapted from a 1954 and 1976 adaptions of the 1937 original movie, it is possible that the makers of Aashique 2 got inspired by those movies as well.
It is interesting that Bradley Cooper’s directorial efforts have been ignored and he has been nominated in other categories. While it is no secret that he is a versatile actor, we were completely blown with his singing.
Lady Gaga is a strong contender for both Best actress and original song category. The film has gained praise among critics and fans alike, leading up to Gaga winning best original song at the Golden Globes for Shallow.
Gaga did seem like a strange choice for the role, however after watching the film she convinced the skeptics that not only can she sing exceptionally she can act just as well. The music sensation has made an impactful performance as Ally.
What made her character more believable was her existing status as a musician. While Gaga is known for her over the top dressing game and numerous avatars, we saw her in her real persona. Her raw look helped connect more with the story and the struggle. It goes without saying that songs from the films are superb, not only is “Shallow” commendable but the song towards the end “I’ll never love again” will give you goosebumps.
