From the Iran Election and Revolution, to the death of Micheal Jackson, or the spread of the news of the Swine Flu pandemic, Twitter is shaping the way news is shared. Social media is quickly becoming the way that people get news. In cases like Twitter information is shared in real-time. People can quickly and efficiently spread the word of what is happening in their world.

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March of 2006 and publicly launched in July of 2006. The site is considered to be a social networking site which uses the concept of micro-blogging. On Twitter users answer a simple question “What are you doing?” One is allowed only 140 characters to share this. Although the question is simple upon first reflection, there is so much that can be shared. Some people share their daily activities, some share news articles with headlines and links, and some share other data.
There are many ways to post to Twitter which include web form, text message, instant message, and also desktop applications such as Tweet Deck or Seesmic Desktop…
Friends, business contacts, and much more can be found on Twitter. Major companies like Dell, Fox, CNN, and even celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Britney Spears are on Twitter. In the past main stream media has been the major way that news and information was broadcasted, but as times change Twitter and other sites are leading the way in the most up to date news. Main stream media is being phased out. The recent and still on going Iran Elections is probably the most current example. The people of Iran used Twitter to coordiante protests and to share the latest movements. World wide people were able to know what was going away thousands of miles away, and the amazing thing is that it is accurate in real time.
