An Historical Place Jandiala Sher Khan:Jandiala Sher Khan is a small but famous town. It is situated at about sixty kilometers from Lahore in the district of Sheikhpura. It is about six hundred years old. Before the arrival of the Mughals in the subcontinent it was a small village.
About four hundred years ago Sher Khan came to Punjab from Afghanistan. Emperor Akbar employed him. Once he passed by this village he liked it very much. He decided to settle down there. So settled there.
Then he met a saint here. His name was Syed Ahmed Ghaznavi. He informed him about the lack of water there. Sher Khan ordered the construction of a large well there. This well still there and it is known as ‘Baoli Sher Khan’. Baoli is a large well into which people get down by stairs to fetch water.
During Sikh period this place was occupied by the Sardar Mehtab Singh and Sardar Mahan Singh. Later on it become a place of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.
Jandiala Sher Khan is more famous for the works of the Punjabi Saint and Poet “Waris Shah”. He wrote legendary tale of “Heer Ranjha”. He is very famous poet of Punjabi poetry but he got unlimited fame through the spiritual and legendary poetry of Heer Ranjha. He lies buried here. A tomb of the grave of Waris Shah has been constructed by the Punjab Government. Its construction is a blend of Mughal and modern architecture. The two graves on the right and left of Waris Shah are of his brothers.
An annual fair is held at the tomb of Waris Shah every year. People from far and beyond places gather here. On this occasion to pay homage to this sufi poet.
The building of two degree colleges one for girls and other for boys has added to the beauty and prestige of the town. Facility of a rest house is also available for tourists. The universal theme of poetry of Waris Shah has made this town a place of world fame.
